At least as a foreign-born coach here in Finland, I am happy about the amalgamation of the sports organizations in this country. We have some good resources for new coaches these days, including the Vastuullinen valmentaja course, the anti-doping course and information about Fair Play. And yes, we need to do more. We especially need more women in the coaching ranks.

I am also grateful that the Finnish Olympic Committee issues a feedback survey on the national level for all clubs in all sports in order to get feedback from players and parents. At least from my point of view, this has resulted in action that was needed.

Women's sport coverage = You can't be it if you can't see it!

Tommy Lindgren

11:04
Measuring the value or importance of women's sport strictly based on current interest (ie. deciding what to cover in the media depending on current public interest, how many people go to matches, what the ratings are) neglects much of the historical sporting context. In a number of different sports, women have not had a level playing field for decades. Promoting gender equality sometimes still requires active work to bring women's sports to the forefront, regardless of their current popularity or the amount of money invested.

Katri Jalonen

Thank you Val for your presentation! It was very eye-opening. However, there was a very binary lens on gender in this presentation. A clear lack of "self reflection" as 21 US states specifically exclude transwomen and girls from participating in sports consistent with their gender identity (The New York Times, June 2023). I'd say this is not in line with title IX... "The Biden administration put forth a proposal earlier this month that would forbid schools and colleges from enacting bans on transgender athletes in sports team." (The Guardian, April 2023). The title of this speech was hence a bit misleading.
